I am freaking out over here over these images and thought it deserved a special post. Kathy and Robert are one of my super awesome couples getting married in October. When Kathy messaged me via Facebook about their upcoming engagement session, I was ready to go through my list of questions and determine where we needed to shoot. Questions like: Forrest, garden or cityscape? Do you two have any places with significant meaning to you? Etc.
Let me just say, there are a TON of gorgeous spots in Atlanta, but when you're shooting 30+engagement sessions a year (and you get bored fairly quickly as I do) you start to really ache for some new scenery. I usually accomplish this by taking a day and scouting. AKA grabbing Starbucks and driving all over the state. I always find new places, but sometimes they come with...er...obstacles. Like having to just pull onto the side of the road because there is no parking lot attached to said awesome location. Or making friends with the person whose property you're on so they don't chase you away with a shotgun.
So when Kathy messaged my about potentially going down to Hilton Head to shoot her engagement session, I was like HECK YES!!! Then came the little thought about the extra charge...drat! Now let me just say, I don't nickel and dime my clients over travel fees. I WANT to travel as much as I can! So I keep my additional fee as low as I possibly can. I messaged her back and she had no problem at all with the additional charge, so I started planning!
The cool thing about destination engagement sessions is that it takes more planning than shooting somewhere in Atlanta I'm already familiar with. So for this particular session, I brought along my gorgeous friend Courtney Drake with Drake Social to stylize the session. Courtney took care of Kathy's hair, makeup, & outfit selection. Having an individual who is in charge of stylizing the session means there will be more cohesion and you end up with a product that is AH-MAZING! Plus, the four of us had a blast traipsing all over the cold, windy island.
All of that said, if you can afford the little extra, definitely consider a destination location for your engagement. It is always so worth it.
